Arnulf Rainer See more
Born in 1929 in Baden near Vienna, Austria, Arnulf Rainer lives and works in Vienna, Upper Austria, Bavaria, and Tenerife. From 1981 to 1995, he held a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Rainer is considered the founder of Art Informel in Austria and is particularly renowned for his ‘overpaintings,’ a technique he pioneered in the 1950s. Starting in 1948, during their time as a couple, Rainer and Maria Lassnig engaged in a deep artistic exchange, profoundly influencing each other's work. Rainer’s relentless pursuit of new approaches to painting and his evolving painterly strategies have been complemented by his performative works and extensive writings.
