Noushin Redjaian studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna: Design/Fashion under Prof. Bernhard Wilhelm and Prof. Hussein Chalayan, Graphics & Print Graphics under Prof. Jan Svenungsson, Transmedia Art under Prof. Brigitte Kowanz and is Co-founder of the art association and collective WellWellWell.
The artist deals with the transcendent nature of symbolic language and its conservation. Inspired by cultural history and poetry, she creates objects and sculptures that confront their past and future. Her parents tought her the art of carpet restoration and she draws inspiration for her work from this knowledge.
Initiated people discover a world of hidden symbols and ciphers in these woven works of art, that are created over hours of manual work, which can tell us a lot about the regional anchoring of each artifact.
“Every carpet is a poem which only the hand that wove it understands”. The shield of the Pakistani Jaldar serves as protection in the home and the forgotten art of weaving a Kasak carpet from Azerbaijan shows maps and tells about the order of the universe. In both traditions, a deliberately woven (human) imperfection is customary out of reverence for (divine) perfection.
Noushin Redjaian explores the natural beauty of the material and its symbolic meaning and deals with elements of nature and time. She creates a discourse through the tension between fragility and permanence. Complex and subtle actions sprout from a variety of materials, their history and constitution. A notion is formed somewhere between foreboding and memory.
