Franz West

Der Ficker / Franz West without Franz West

The broschure contains the coverage of two exhibition projects:
1) Franz West without Franz West
A project by the Centre d’Art Santa Mónica, CASM, in collaboration with the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno, CAAM, Gran Canaria
San Antonio Abad hall is staging Franz West without Franz West, a project relating to the Austrian artist, but without showing any works by him. Instead the project supplies documentation and shows works by artists coming before and after West, to retrieve his grimace and humour in what has been termed the Carnivalisation of contemporary art.
Franz West without Franz West conceived by de Antonio Ortega, education director of the Centre d’Art Santa Mónica (CASM), in Barcelona, and is curated by Veit Loers, who regards art as a manifestation of human urges. This show accentuates West’s gesturalism and his methof of artistic formalisation.

The show included documentary material, videos, books, urls, etc, by or relating to the following artists: John Bock, Fischli & Weiss, Georg Herold, Martin Kippenberger, Sarah Lucas, Otto Mühl, Bruce Nauman, Antonio Ortega, Peter Piller, Dieter Roth, José Ruiz, Santiago Serra, Annika Ström, David Shringley, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Rosemarie trockel, Hans Weigand / Heimo Zobernig, Ralf Ziervogel, David Zink-Yi.

2) Der Ficker

The Der Ficker exhibition is the result of the interaction of Franz West’s ironic and imaginative world with contemporary Austrian artists working today.

The show is a complicitous wink and a tribute to the Austrian publisher Ludwig von Ficker (1880–1967) who is internationally known for his active involvement in the art scene of his time. An Anti-Nazi activist, von Ficker was known for his ties to such philosophers as Ludwig Wittgenstein, who asked him to contribute his donations to the needy artists. Von Ficker disseminated his ideas through such publications as Die Fackel by Karl Kraus and Der Brenner which he founded in 1910 publishing works by artists, poets and writers like Karl kraus, Adolf Loos, Rainer Maria Rilke, Else Lasker Schüler, Georg Trakl, among others.

The exhibition invites the spectator to enter into a dialogue with this same participatory spirit.

Der Ficker presented the work of Clegg & Guttmann, Muntean & Rosenblum, Rudolf Polansky, Tamuna Sirbiladze & Franz West.
